You'll want to start saying "beer me" more often after learning about Mildred Bowers' secret to living a long life. The Mount Pleasant, South Carolina woman is turning in a couple of weeks and told that she has one simple trick: "Have a beer, doctor's orders."
She's not kidding. After having a conversation with a few nurses about drinking more of her favorite beverage, they said "why not?" — but recommended Bowers get her doctor's approval. Apparently, he immediately said "yes." So every day at 4 p.m. she enjoys a nice cold brew. Though, Bowers admits there might be other factors at play when it comes to her health: "It's all in the genes," she says. "I feel okay because I'm in good health." Sounds good to us.
But it's not just Bowers who thinks she's discovered to the key to living well into the 100s. Before her death, a 109-year-old woman named Jessie Gallan claimed staying single was the best way to a long life, while Susannah Mushatt Jones, a 112-year-old woman once said it's all about eating bacon every day.
We may have missed the boat on the staying single part, but beer and bacon? That we can do.
