Prince Carl Philip of Sweden was born to King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden May 13, 1979. It's ladies first for this guy. Carl Philip is third in line to the throne, behind his sister, Crown Princess Victoria, 37, (shown here on Christmas 1981) and her daughter, Estelle. He also has a younger sister, Princess Madeline, 32.

3. He's a military man.
Like Prince William, Prince Harry and other royals, Carl Philip served in his country's military. He joined the Royal Swedish Navy, where he studied in a Naval Office training course, served on the H.M.S. Carlskrona and held a number of roles including combat boat coordinator and sub-lieutenant. He's currently a lieutenant.

An adrenaline junkie, the prince is a licensed driver and competes frequently. On May 9, at the Swedish Touring Car Championship, he collided with another driver and spun off the road, ending his chance at that race.

After serving in the navy, Prince Carl Phillip studied at Forsbergs School of Graphic Design in Stockholm. After finishing his two years there, he then spent a year at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. His designs include a calendar benefitting the World Childhood Foundation, a line of silver cutlery and a fireplace screen from Stockholm-based company Svenskt Tenn (pictured). He even won a design competition for Martha's Vineyard that he entered under an alias!

9. He's open about his challenges.
Like his his father, King Carl Gustaf, and sister, Crown Princess Victoria,Carl Philip battled dyslexia as a child. But as a teenage boarding school student at Lundsberg, he was finally able to thrive academically. "It's about all the students who fight the jumping letters and digits of their textbooks everyday," he said in a speech at the National Agency for Special Needs Education. "About all the ones who get laughed at when they are making mistakes. About the ones who have to fight harder than their classmates to reach the same school results. I know exactly how it feels. I was one of them."
