Those "This Is Us" Finale Flash-Forwards Brought Out Some Terrible Fan Theories

These have us genuinely worried about season three.

this is us finale spoiler

Last night's This Is Us finale was a mostly calm, gently cathartic episode bookended by huge and deeply stressful moments.

The episode opened with a "what could have been" dream sequence of Old Jack and Old Rebecca renewing their vows at their 40-year wedding anniversary, and ended on a trio of flash-forwards that left the entire fandom shaken.

First, in the present day, we see Deja – who's developed some hardcore anger issues since her mom gave up custody of her – smashing Randall's beloved car with a baseball bat that once belonged to Jack. As if that weren't upsetting enough, we then cut to the flash-forwards which include a glimpse of a very sick Toby being taken care of by Kate, and an ominous exchange between Older Randall and 20-something Tess."It's time to go see her, Tess," Randall says. "I'm not ready," Tess replies. "Me neither," he admits.

What?!? Who is "her"? Is Beth okay? What is happening?!?!?!

Now that the mystery of Jack's death is resolved, the show inevitably had to give its viewers something new to obsess over, and they've already risen to the task. Be warned, though — some of their theories are incredibly dark. For example…

Here’s my theory. Tonight showed that Deja has a streak of uncontrolled anger. I think she eventually takes her anger of being abandoned by her mother out on Beth (as she predicted) and kills her. I think Randall and Tess are referring to visiting Deja in prison.

Yep, you read that correctly. One of the most popular theories combines two horrifying events: that Beth is dead, and that Deja is in jail for killing — or at least seriously harming — her.

My theory: Deja is in jail for killing Beth (Randall's wife) in the future

Other fans, though, have pointed out that this would be an extraordinarily dark and bleak development, especially given how rarely foster care is portrayed on television. It doesn't feel very This Is Us.

Foster care isn't depicted much on tv. I don't believe they would create such an alarmingly violent storyline of Deja killing Beth. Ppl need to drop this theory. She's an upset kid, her mom just left.

But what if we remove the Beth element entirely? Maybe Beth is just fine — scratch that, Beth had BETTER be just fine — in the future, but Deja is still incarcerated for something, and has been estranged from Randall and Tess as a result.

I’m here for Kevin’s new relationship. Also, I think Toby wasn’t in Kate’s dreams bc she wouldn’t have met him if Jack was alive. And I’m choosing to believe Deja is incarcerated in the future and that’s who they are going to see bc I don’t accept the dead Beth theory

Or what if showing Deja destroying Randall's car is pure misdirection, designed to make us think that the flash-forward is about her when it's actually about someone completely different? Say…. Tess's sister Annie?

I think it's Annie y'all. We never hear about Annie. We NEVER worry sbout annie. Its always the quiet ones that no one is worried about.... like kevin. Its Annie. theory

And here's a pretty strong theory about that little boy that adult Tess is seen working with in flash-forwards early in the season.
