The This Is Us season 2 finale, "The Wedding," aired Tuesday night and ended with a montage of future plot twists that could make anyone's head spin. Viewers immediately began to shout out their predictions on social media about what may happen to our favorite characters in future seasons. However, the This Is Us writers dropped a few hints throughout the episode that may give fans insight into how the storylines will actually play out. Did you catch them all?
Here is a recap of some of the moments you may have missed in the season 2 finale.
1. Toby's parents gave us a clue that his future health issues are likely related to depression.
In "The Wedding," we are introduced to Toby's parents played by Dan Lauria and Wendie Malick. Before the ceremony, they take their son aside to express some concerns about his future wife and how she appears to be "unstable." However, Toby's mom lets us in on a major hint about Toby's own mental health issues during their conversation.
"You remember what it was like when things fell apart with Josie?" she tells him. "Remember how you stopped going to work, and I found you in the middle of a work day hiding under the covers like a little kid. Sweetie, you were severely depressed for a very long time."
In the end of the episode, we see Toby is once again in bed, under the covers, with the lights dim. Kate tells him his doctor called about adjusting his meds. Many viewers believe his health struggles may be related to his previous heart issues, but Toby's mother dropped a major spoiler if you were listening closely.
2. Rebecca sang "Moonshadow," because it was the same song she sang when Jack first met her.
The season 1 finale showed fans how Jack and Rebecca first met, which is shown around the 3:59 mark in the episode highlight above. It's appropriate that in the season 2 finale, at the vow renewal in Kate's dream, Rebecca sings the same song she sang when Jack first saw her at the lounge. It's truly a full circle moment that ties together the couple's love story from one season finale to another.
It's also interesting to note that the song is titled "Moonshadow," which explains why Jack gave Rebecca a moon necklace and it's the one memento Jack saved from the fire for Rebecca. Bonus fact: It's also a song from .
3. Kate hid Jack's wooden screwdriver in her bouquet.
In the "Super Bowl Sunday" episode (the one about Jack's death), Kate told Toby a story about how her bedroom window used to leak when it rained and her dad would always fix it, showing just how amazing he was. It was a memory that really captured her father's essence.
"There was this bedroom in my window that leaked every time it rained, and my dad would always fix it," Kate told Toby. "He was so patient, and he was just steady — never gave up on that damn window."
In this episode, Kate is searching for something of Jack's to incorporate into the wedding to make her feel like he is with her in spirit. She finally decides on a screwdriver that she hides inside of her bouquet. The screwdriver is the same one Jack used to fix her bedroom window.
4. Randall gave a clue about Deja's future during his wedding toast.
"While everything else may change, if you choose right, your people will stay the same. Whether that's tonight or a year from now or 10 years from now," Randall said during the reception as Deja smashed his car outside.
In a flash-forward scene that followed, Randall says to a grown-up Tess, "It's time to go see her." "I'm not ready," she responds. "Me neither," he says. Fans have speculated that either Deja, Beth or even Annie could be the "her." However, because of the sequence of events in this scene, it is more than likely that Deja has ended up in trouble somewhere down the line.
5. Kevin and Zoe end up dating, but many hints throughout the episode clue us into why a wedding may not be in their future.
In one of the final scenes, Zoe (a.k.a Beth's cousin who was introduced to us for the first time in this episode), appears to end up dating Kevin. The couple are cozied up together on a plane to Vietnam and during the flight, Kevin holds a picture of Jack in his military uniform. This alludes that we may further explore Jack's past in future episodes.
But how far will Kevin and Zoe's relationship go? Zoe told Deja during their one-on-one conversation on the bridge that "weddings are not her thing" — repeatedly. Also, when Kevin is playing the "Worst Case Scenario" game with Randall, one of his examples is that he and Kate never end up getting married to a significant other and are forever alone.
6. The writers turn the table on the fans, and make them play the Worst Case Scenario game until the next season.
Randall and Beth introduced the "Worst Case Scenario" game this episode, in which they imagine the worst things that could possibly happen when they are faced with a problem. What viewers may not have realized at the beginning of the episode was that they were going to be playing the game after a series of cliffhangers aired, in the final moments of the episode. Who do Randall and Tess not want to go see? Why is Toby sick? What happens to Deja after her outburst? Guess we'll have to wait until season 3 this fall.
