Roseanne is returning for new episodes in 2018, featuring the iconic sitcom's original cast. And yes, that means John Goodman is back as Dan Conner, Roseanne's husband — even though his character was revealed to have died in the series finale. And a new promo shows they're not afraid to joke about Goodman's return.
The promo shows Goodman as Dan, plus Lecy Goranson as Becky, watching a basketball game on television. When Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) comes in and asks how the game is going, Dan says the Chicago Bulls of the '90s would have done much better. "You can't live in the past, Dan," Roseanne says. "When things are gone, they're gone forever." The clip ends with Barr's signature hearty laugh.
Of course, this quote has multiple meanings. One, it's a reference to Dan's return after his character's death on the sitcom. And two, it's a reference to the show itself, coming back after being "gone."
In the divisive series finale of Roseanne, it was revealed that Dan had died from a heart attack. But Goodman this summer that he wasn't sure how the show would address his return. "I don't know," he said. "I think they're just going to ignore it. There might be a funny reference to it."
According to , the show will be set in the same Lanford, Illinois house, with Dan and Roseanne now in their 60s. "The biggest challenge in the first episode was figuring out how to reestablish everybody and explain what they've been doing for the last 21 years," co-executive producer Bruce Rasmussen said. And the original Becky, Goranson, is back, though Sarah Chalke will return as a new character.
