The new revival of Roseanne brings back nearly all the characters fans of the original series grew to love. But there’s one actor whose absence has already been felt: Glenn Quinn, who played Mark, Becky's boyfriend and subsequent husband.
Quinn became well loved by audiences for playing Mark Healy, who was dim-witted and chauvinistic, but had his sincere and kind moments, too. After Roseanne, the Irish actor went on to have a role in Angel, the spinoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But Quinn was battling personal demons that led to his death more than a decade ago.
In 2002, Quinn was found dead in a friend’s home in North Hollywood, according to the . The 32-year-old died from an accidental heroin overdose, and no foul play was suspected. Quinn had been suffering from drug addiction for some time, the reported. Just before his death, he had been asked to leave a rehab center in Miami because he was using drugs.
When it came time to bring back Roseanne, the creative team knew they wanted to pay tribute to their late colleague. One way he comes up is through a new character. Darlene and David’s 8-year-old son is named Mark. Played by Ames McNamara, Mark is a gender-nonconforming kid who likes to wear feminine clothing.
"We all had great affection for Glenn. We really wanted to say something," executive producer Bruce Helford told reporters on a press tour, according to . "He comes up a couple times. It isn't just [the premiere episode]. He comes up a couple times in the course of the nine episodes."
