Kathie Lee Gifford announced in mid-December that she was leaving the Today show around the time of her 11th anniversary. Now, as April 5 (her official end date) approaches, about the fourth-hour host — and for good reason.
What's clear about the entire Today show crew is that they will all miss Kathie Lee wholeheartedly. But what they remember about her and have taken away from her over the years differs in so many wonderfully beautiful ways.
See what Kathie Lee's co-hosts have said about her leading up to her departure from the morning show, and you'll understand what we mean:
When KLG announced she was stepping down from her role, Hoda was, of course, sitting right next to her. Throughout her time on Today, Hoda has gushed many times about her co-star. But moments after her dear friend broke the news, it was then that Hoda, who has been co-hosting with Kathie since 2008, said, perhaps, her kindest words ever.
"The minute you stepped into my life with both feet, everything changed," Hoda began as she held back tears. "I was scribbling in my journal about you ... I was writing everything down and I thought about the day, 'cause, you chose me, and that's how it started. And so, I was thinking about, like, everything good that has happened in my life has happened since you came."
Later on, Hoda made it crystal clear to that she will miss working with her friend so much.
"She just never takes anything too seriously," Hoda said. "Everyday is like a little party and I think she's taught all of us ... a trip is not a fall. It's not an epic fall. It's a moment. You pick yourself up and you keep going and she does it with laughs. I feel like I learned television from her."
Although Craig and Kathie Lee didn't always work the same hours on the show (Craig was formerly a Saturday morning co-host), he seems very fond of his fellow Today co-worker.
"One of the things I've always enjoyed about you [talking to Kathie Lee] ... your faith. You wear your faith on your sleeve, you talk about it," Craig declared. "You go out to lunch with Kathie Lee, you're going to pray for three or four minutes before you eat."
He added: "I've always admired that about you."
Sheinelle, like Craig, didn't always have similar schedules (Sheinelle is a co-host of Weekend Today and also works the 9 a.m. ET weekday slot as of January).
"I want people to know all of things you [Kathie Lee] did for some of us behind the scenes," Sheinelle while sitting with some of the Today cast members. "There are so many quotes that you have given me, and you haven't even recognized that you said them, that now when I go speak to kids or I go speak to groups, I quote you."
"Be free" was one of those quotes, another was "the good Lord gives you a new cup of mercy every morning." Sheinelle also revealed that Kathie helped her feel at ease on the show when she prayed, and asked God to "shine through her."
Another Weekend Today anchor that was touched by Kathie Lee's presence on the show over the years was Dylan. Like her co-stars, Dylan echoed that she appreciated all the lessons Kathie Lee taught her behind the cameras and considered it a privilege to watch her work.
"Thanks for your kindness and friendship. I’ve learned so much from you and it’s been an honor working with you!!" Dylan .
"You inspire all of us," Savannah told Kathie Lee the morning she made her announcement. That same day, Savannah also that the fourth-hour host was a "true pro, a true legend, a true friend. We love you, @KathieLGifford."
Jenna Bush Hager
"Kathie Lee taught me how to eat peanut butter off a spoon!" Jenna revealed to , before she was announced as her successor. "She has really shown all of us how to work with humor, but how to put her family first. She's done that through all these years and she's been such a mentor to all of us."
Like her co-workers, Jenna also shared some kind words about the co-host on .
"We adore you KLG. Thanks for your love, friendship and for your hilarity. You will be dearly missed," she said.
The weather anchor that he was hoping that "she'd change her mind." He also said he was "ignoring it," indicating that he didn't like to imagine what the show will be like without Kathie.
"You know … it's gonna be very bittersweet but, you know, she has been such a great part of Today, so it's — I don’t wanna think about it!” he said.
Al also added that he'll miss "her laugh, her sense of humor, and her faith," and that she's always reminded him to "be yourself" over the years.
Safe to say, April 5 will be a hard one for the Today crew.
