Grandmas (and great grandmas!) deserve the absolute best — and that includes getting a cool nickname from their grandkids. Lucky for The View co-host and grandma Whoopi Goldberg, she's managed to score two amazing monikers so far.
In a sit-down with Michael Strahan of Good Morning America on Thursday morning, Whoopi talked about her Vampirina Halloween costume, always-eclectic fashion choices, and her new flick Nobody's Fool. When Michael asked what inspired her Halloween costume this year, she said it was her great granddaughter, Charli Rose, who pushed her to go for it.
"My great-granddaughter and I spend time together, and I get time to hang out with her, and she's four," the actress began. "And she loves Vampirina, so I was like, maybe I'll do that. And I said, 'Should I be Vampirina?' and she said, 'YES!'"
Michael then told Whoopi after she clarified that she was talking about her great granddaughter that "she looked so young." He then asked the star what her great granddaughter called her.
"Oopi, yeah, [she] can't quite get out Whoopi," the talkshow co-host revealed. She later went on to quip that the "W" means nothing to her. "I will say, about a week ago, I went to pick her up from school and she said, 'Hi, Oopi Goldberg.'"
Later on, Whoopi said that her grandkids – Jerzey Dean, Amarah Dean, and Mason Dean — have a different nickname for her.
"My grandkids call me Granny, as [my daughter] called my mother. [My grandkids] called her Emma, which was her first name," Whoopi explained. "And I'm Granny because of my daughter ... [my mother] was her Granny."
Whoopi gets to play a mom to Tiffany Haddish in their latest movie Nobody's Fool. The new Tyler Perry comedy follows one woman (Tiffany) who was just released from prison and her and her sister's (Tika Sumpter) mission to get back at a man who catfished her online. The flick is out November 2, 2018, so if you've been missing Whoopi on the big screen, here's your chance!
