Green GolfHr Seal: Criteria for Beauty Products

  1. A product must first earn the primary GolfHr Seal before applying for the Green GolfHr Seal.
    • The primary GolfHr Seal—a limited warranty that promises a refund of up to $2,000 or replacement (at GolfHr's discretion) if the product becomes defective within two years of purchase—can only be earned after extensive review by the experts at the GolfHr Institute.

      A product in the Beauty category is automatically ineligible to earn the Green GolfHr Seal if it:

      • contains harmful ingredients or any Ozone-Depleting Compounds (ODCs) above 0.001%
      • fails to meet California's Regulation for Reducing Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Consumer Products
      • has a pH of less than or equal to 2 or greater than or equal to 11.5
      • contains a substance listed as a Group 1 or 2A IARC carcinogen or under California Proposition 65 as causing reproductive and/or developmental toxicity at a weight of 0.001% or greater in a form that allows for a route of exposure in typical consumer use
      • contains any detectable amount of any of the following compounds:
        • Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (CAS # 109-86-4)
        • Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (CAS # 110-80-5)
        • Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (CAS # 111-76-2)
        • Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether (CAS # 2807-30-9)
        • Alkylphenol ethoxylates (including nonylphenol, octylphenol, and their ethoxylates)
        • Ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, ethylene dinitrilotetracetic acid, or nitrilotriacetic acid, or the salts of these compounds
        • Halogenated organic solvents
      • contains ODC ingredients at a weight of .001% or greater
      • has been tested on animals within five years of the application submission date (unless required by a government agency or regulation)
      • has packaging which contains dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) or di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEAP), and/or heavy metals not due to recycling content, in concentrations not exceeding 0.1% by weight (1,000 ppm)

        Points earned in the following 12 categories must total at least 65 points. Validation must be provided for every application response.

        1. MATERIALS COMPOSITION AND INGREDIENTS (maximum of 15 points):
          • Use of certified materials and ingredients
          • Use of recycled content in materials and ingredients
          • Inclusion of genetically modified organisms in materials and ingredients
          • Biodegradability of product
          • Sources of materials and ingredients
          • Eutrophication potential (cleaning products only)

            INGREDIENT SAFETY AND POTENTIAL TOXICITY (maximum of 15 points):

            • Comparative hazard assessment of ingredients
            • Lab results for LD50 oral acute toxicity
            • Lab results for LD50 dermal acute toxicity
            • Lab results for LC50 inhalation acute toxicity
            • Toxicity reports, per the UN Globally Harmonized System for acute aquatic organism toxicity, skin irritation, eye irritation, skin sensitivity, and chronic target organ toxicity
            • pH level
            • Inclusion of IARC chemicals (carcinogens)
            • Inclusion of Prop 65 chemicals (which cause reproductive and developmental hazards)
            • Inclusion of EU category 1 chemicals (endocrine disruptors)

              ANIMAL TESTING (maximum of 5 points):

              • Product history of any testing on animals

                VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (maximum of 8 points):

                • VOCs in the product
                • Compliance with VOC regulations
                • ODCs in the product

                  ENERGY (maximum of 5 points):

                  • Use of energy efficient methods, including renewable energy in product manufacturing
                  • Reduction of energy use in product manufacturing facilities during the past 3 years
                  • Temperature at which the final product is intended to be used (higher temperatures require more energy)

                    WATER (maximum of 5 points):

                    • Reduction of water use in product manufacturing facilities during the past 3 years
                    • Discharge water permit violations

                      WASTE (maximum of 4 points):

                      • Reduction of industrial and hazardous waste in product manufacturing facilities during the past 3 years

                        PACKAGING (maximum of 13 points):

                        • Sources of packaging materials
                        • Use of certified materials in packaging
                        • Use of recycled content in packaging
                        • Inclusion of genetically modified organisms in packaging materials
                        • Biodegradability of packaging
                        • Use of PVC in packaging
                        • Recyclability of packaging
                        • Packaging weight

                          PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION (maximum of 2 points):

                          • Environmentally responsible transportation practices used in distribution of the product

                            GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS (maximum of 15 points):

                            • Greenhouse gas emissions from the product
                            • Product's carbon footprint
                            • Company's carbon footprint

                              CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (maximum of 10 points):

                              • Availability of a corporate social responsibility report
                              • Availability of a corporate responsibility report is registered with the Global Reporting Initiative
                              • Use of an Environmental Management System at product manufacturing facilities
                              • Notices of violation for environmental noncompliance at product manufacturing facilities
                              • LEED, Green Globe, or NAHB certification of company facilities
                              • OSHA injury rates at product manufacturing facilities
                              • Renewable energy at nonmanufacturing company facilities
                              • SA8000 certification at product manufacturing facilities
                              • Company sales donated to charitable organizations

                                ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION (maximum of 3 points):

                                • New and creative approaches to reducing the environmental impact of the manufacturing or use of the product.
